When Ukraine sees economic prosperity the profession of ethnographer will be among the most popular and well paid. You may of course argue with this statement. But jokes aside, the traditional culture is becoming a rarity in the modern globalized world. Ukraine is one of the few European countries where ethnic culture is not just a historical fact but a reality. Therefore much of appreciation deserve the enthusiasts who are not only aspire to preserve the vast ethnic heritage of this land but also update it, make it ‘digestible’ to the younger generations, and ultimately popularize it throughout the world. This is especially what the authentic Ukrainian musical culture is concerned.

Kateryna Kosyanenko, representative of the Ukrainian artistic school, graduate of Kyiv’s National Academy of Fine Arts, was awarded First Prize at Salon d’Automne 2003 held in the biggest exhibition hall in Paris, and patronized by the President of France Jaque Chiraq, Minister of Culture of France Jaque Aillagon, Mayer of Paris Bertran Delanoe

In Ukraine, it might be useless to remind the words of the half-forgotten old nuisance “proletariat leader” Lenin who said almost a century ago that “among all arts for us cinema is the most important”. This outstanding PR-man of his times well understood that cinematography has been a powerful tool to influence public opinions, educate and thus set a new form of ideology. Nevertheless, despite the ideological pressure Ukraine gave birth to a range of talented filmmakers who have been listed among “fathers” of the world cinematographic art. So what is the history of this most popular among arts in Ukraine and how are things at present?

There are such places in the world where achievements of civilization do not really matter. This is what the life high up the Carpathian Mountains is concerned. Either they are too difficult to creep high in the mountains, or simply refused by the original mindset of the highlanders. Whatever the reason the Carpathian highlands preserve their distinct centuries long ethno-culture with its enchanting holidays, hand made clothes and musical instruments. And what is most important, absolutely original musical rhythms, sounds and dances which have something almost primeval in them.
